This bold statement piece was inspired by a 1597 portrait of Ellen Maurice by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger (Flemish, 1561-1635/36). An heiress who claimed direct descent from the ancient princes of Wales, Maurice is shown in splendid attire that emulates images of Queen Elizabeth I. Marcus Gheeraerts was the most important member of an artistic Anglo-Flemish family that had a major impact on early modern English painting.
